Odawara Hotel (Project) Odawara, 1917
With Imperial Hotel funding behind it, this hotel was to be the centerpiece of a hot springs resort and amusement park in Odawara, a seaside town southwest of Tokyo.
Although the design was marked by Wright's trademark horizontal thrusts and cantilevered terraces,
it was also, like his design for the Imperial, aggressively classical.
Legend has it that the Odawara Hotel was nearly completed, but never opened because the owners failed
to gain access to a hot mineral water source to feed its baths. Neither photos nor foundations survive
to provide proof.
